Class Description
Learn how to Throw! This camp will teach the beginning basics of wheel throwing. Make mugs, cups and bowls, and decorate them using classic techniques such as slip trailing or underglaze painting! Students will learn how to center on the wheel, wedge their own clay, and trim their own pots. Please bring your youth on-time and ready to get messy! This course meets from 9am-12pm for five mornings from Monday, August 12 - Friday, August 23rd at Wildfire Ceramic Studio, 2502 Murphy Unit A. Day 1: Learning to center on the wheel, and throwing first pots! Day 2: Learning how to wedge your own clay, and throwing continued. Day 3: Throwing continued. Learn how to make handles for mugs! Day 4: Trimming pots Day 5: Learn how to decorate your ceramics using underglazes and slip trailing! This camp is designed for ages 11-14 years only. Throwing is physically demanding and we want to set students up for success. Children of younger ages often do not have the physical capabilities to throw on the wheel or offer their hand in cleaning up. The fee is $200 per child and includes instruction, mid-morning snacks each day, all the required clay, tools, and glazing/firing services. We can accommodate 8 youth in total, so be sure to sign-up early! If you are signing up more than one child, please fill out the registration info for each child. Enrollment deadline: *July 28* at midnight. Instructor: Gabs Conway, the Family Fun instructor and WCS Summer Camps Counselor, has nearly 10 years teaching experience with kids and adults alike, including facilitation of several summer camps. Gabs grew up throwing and sculpting alongside her father while he studied ceramics in Mankato, Minnesota. In May of 2021, she earned her BFA, with a concentration in ceramics at the University of Wisconsin - Stout. Now, she is a full time artist and educator. If you would like to print and bring it on the first day of camp, please arrive early so Gabs can look it over prior to the start of the camp. All cancellation requests must be emailed to wildfireceramicstudio@gmail.com. Refunds and credits are given according to the following cancellation timelines: Prior to 1 month before course start date: Full refund 1 month to 2 weeks before course start date: 50% refund 2 weeks to 2 days before *enrollment deadline*: 50% credit Some exceptions may be made depending on extraordinary circumstances. We will offer a full refund if we need to cancel a course. Please return to Summer Camp page to fill out the Waiver for each child.
